Fruit on the bottom damaged internally by freezing. Treated with AntiStress, the fruit on the top shows superior internal quality with no ice marking.

Frost and Freeze Protection

Citrus trees in a controlled environment were treated with five brands of frost protectant. After 4 days the temperature was lowered below 32°F for 4 hours, and then to 28°F for 2 hours. Two weeks later the trees were evaluated for damage. Of the five products tested, only AntiStress showed any significant protection over the controls, with frost damage reduced by 33%. The other products showed no aid in cold tolerance. (Trial results available on request.)

Because not all buds open on the same date, there may be tight buds, 1/4 open buds, and full flowers on one tree. If a closed bud is sprayed on Monday, opens on Wednesday, and sees frost on Friday, that flower will be damaged. Complete coverage of the damage-prone areas (buds, flowers, fruit, stems, and leaves) is important. So for complete protection, application should be as close before frost/freeze time as possible.

Individual growers who use AntiStress for protection from low temperatures have developed specific application practices for their particular crop and location. Some fruit producers apply weekly from bud burst through fruit set. Others apply only after most of the flowers are open, but just before a freeze, leaving later blossoms unsprayed and exposed to frost. In this way, the main crop is protected while frost "thins" the other blooms.

Other growers are more concerned with prevention of damage to orchard and nursery stock, foliage, ornamentals, or maturing fruit. AntiStress is effective in all of these areas. (Please see the AntiStress Users' Manual for advice about specific applications.)

AntiStress extends plant tolerances below their normal freeze point. Thorough application gives several degrees of added protection: 3.4° to 5.6°C (6° to 10°F) with even better results in special cases.

Above: Fruit-drop after a -5°C freeze (23°F.) Using AntiStress, the trees on the right show a 92% reduction in fruit-drop (103:8.)
